In the fertile creative scene of New York’s jazz community of the late 1940s, one of the strangest and most important figures was Baroness Pannonica “Nica” de Koenigswarter. The Baroness’ move to New York was purportedly motivated by her love of the music of Thelonious Monk. This concert by the Levine Jazz Quintet will be devoted to music inspired by the Baroness and central to the bebop scene of the time, and will conclude with a tribute to the great Austrian jazzman Joe Zawinul.
Sponsored by the Hilda and Leonard Kaplan Foundation.
