Haven’t played in a while? New to an instrument? Experience joyful music making and join us for weekly classes that include a group instrumental lesson. The ensemble is designed to prepare students for participation in the advanced New Horizons Band. No audition required.
(Ages 11 - 18)
This fun-filled camp is a great opportunity for talented young musicians in middle and high school who are interested in performing rock, jazz or blues. Participants are grouped into bands based upon skill level, the wishes of friends to play together, and the type of music each person enjoys. During the week, students work to develop their performance and ensemble skills in their group, improve their technical and improvisational skills in instrument-specific sessions, gain experience in all three genres of rock, jazz, and blues, and enjoy workshops and demonstrations by Levine's stellar rock and jazz faculty. Each band will show off their skills in a final concert on Friday!
(Ages 14 - 18)
Now in its 8th year, join us for the best week-long workshop available to high school students in the area. You’ll participate in interactive workshops and rehearsals for clarinet choir, jazz clarinet, reed working, chamber music, master classes, Senior Regional workshops, sound production and more, plus a final concert. Added together, you will get an action packed week geared to the serious high school player!

Dedicated to the specific needs of saxophonists ages 11-18, Levine's Saxophone at Strathmore summer camp has become an important event for musicians throughout the DC metropolitan area. Take part in a fun-filled week of individual instruction, chamber music, and large saxophone ensembles, culminating in a final student performance at The Music Center at Strathmore.

This three-day workshop is designed to give amateur jazz musicians an opportunity to come and expand their jazz experience under the direction of Levine's expert jazz faculty. The workshop includes small and large group jam sessions, level-specific jazz instructional sessions, as well as an end-of-weekend concert. The weekend is open to adult jazz musicians of all levels and to all instruments.

This course guides students through fundamental material about pitches, intervals, triads, seventh chords, voicing, harmonic progressions, chord substitutions and scales, including seven diatonic modes, blues scales and symmetrical scales. Students analyze recorded performances and also write their own jazz solos.

Using elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, structure and expression, students of all instruments develop the ability to improvise in many styles, including jazz. Students also learn how to listen to and interact with each other while improvising in groups.

Developed by Levine’s Chamber Music Department, the Sonata Project provides an intensive workshop, master class and performance experience for duos of very dedicated young musicians. Auditions are open to instrumentalists and pianists, as well as existing duos (with permission of their current coach). Due to the intensive performance schedule, Sonata Project participants are expected to rehearse weekly, in addition to regular class attendance, and receive regular coachings on the assigned repertoire from their private teachers.
A yearlong class, Sonata Project provides twelve 90-minute classes throughout the school year. Class and performance dates are determined at the beginning of each semester.

This ensemble offers training for middle school and high school students who wish to play in a jazz band. Students study jazz repertoire, develop improvisation skills and build on their ability to work as a group. Past performances have included the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, and Taste of Arlington. Please note that an audition is required.

This ensemble is designed for adults who enjoy making music and are reviving their musical studies. Weekly classes include a group instrumental lesson and a full band rehearsal, and the ensemble receives performance opportunities throughout the year.

This ensemble is designed for intermediate and advanced French horn players interested in exploring the vast array of original and arranged repertoire for horn ensemble.
(Ages 14 to Adult)
Designed for intermediate and advanced woodwind instrumentalists, this class helps students develop woodwind chamber music skills. The mixed woodwind instrumentation of the ensemble allows students to expand their knowledge of woodwind repertoire as well as build strong woodwind fundamentals such as intonation and articulation. Student ensembles include various woodwind quintets, quartets, and trios that receive performance opportunities throughout the year.
(Adults)
Explore great repertoire in an ensemble setting, while improving intonation, bowing styles, phrasing, dynamics and ensemble techniques. All instruments are welcome! This community ensemble for adults is open to advanced-beginner and early-intermediate musicians, performing mostly Baroque music.
(Ages 11 - 19)
Based on the models offered by most of the youth orchestra programs in the US, this ensemble program is designed for intermediate to advanced string, woodwind, brass and percussion students. The young musicians study a wide variety of musical styles from classical to jazz, prepare three concert programs throughout the year, and repeat each program in two performances: one in the Lang Recital Hall at Levine’s NWDC Campus, and the second at Levine’s Maryland Campus at Strathmore.
(Ages 8 - 13)
