Early Childhood Elementary Teacher Position

Levine School of Music is pleased to announce a position in the Early Childhood Elementary Music Department, commencing immediately.  Applicants should possess the minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Music Education and show evidence of a strong background in and commitment to teaching both infants and toddlers. The ability to sing songs and lead group classes unaccompanied and in a range appropriate for the ECEM Program is required. 

This position requires teaching classes for children ages 4 months through 5 years of age, flexibility and the ability to travel within the DC/MD/VA metropolitan area to all of Levine’s sites, Saturday morning teaching required.

Part-time Guitar Instructor

The Levine School of Music Guitar Department is seeking an electric and acoustic guitar instructor to teach at several campuses, starting in the fall 2009 semester. Saturday teaching availability is highly desirable.

Candidates should be highly organized and have experience teaching students of all ages with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds in both private and group class settings. Ideally, candidates should have a strong classical or jazz background and a Masters Degree in music performance or education, or equivalent experience is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable teaching a wide variety of musical styles, including blues, jazz, rock, and other popular guitar styles.

Successful candidates will join a collegial team of teachers committed to teaching at the highest level, and will have the opportunity to become a full-time instructor as time, demand, and scheduling constraints allow. Performance opportunities may also be possible for those with strong performance backgrounds. Compensation will be awarded according to qualifications and experience. SUZUKI VIOLIN INSTRUCTOR POSITION

Levine School of Music is pleased to announce two positions in the Suzuki Strings Department commencing September 1, 2010.  Applicants should possess BM in Music Performance or Music Education Required, MM in Music Performance or Music Education preferred. Training in the Suzuki Method through Book 4 required, have a dedication to and understanding of the Suzuki philosophy, and have teaching experience with children of all ages. Applicants should possess a love of music, teaching, and children as well as the desire to nurture and shape the lives of young musicians.  

This position includes teaching private lessons and group classes over the academic year. The instructor must be flexible to teach at any of the four of Levine’s campuses in the Washington DC area, with the intention of adding more days/hours in the future.  Saturday teaching is required.   Compensation will be awarded according to qualifications and experience.

Position:    Director of Music Education

POSITION SUMMARY:
  Provides leadership for a broad music curriculum and a faculty of 150 talented musicians, who provide instruction at four campuses to more than three thousand students of all ages and abilities.   Develops and implements music education programs that are responsive to the varying communities and constituencies that the School serves, that are pedagogically sound, and that support Levine’s continuing preeminence in music innovation and instruction.  Responsible for faculty hiring, setting academic policies, overseeing the education budget, related fund-raising and other administrative duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO):
•    Leads the School’s music education programming with the goal of offering a curriculum of the highest quality in all areas, guided by the School’s core values of excellence and opportunity;
•    Sets and achieves goals for faculty recruitment and retention.
•    Maintains and expands educational and other strategic partnerships, both within and outside the region;
•    Develops and oversees a faculty governance structure that spurs programmatic creativity within and across departments and disciplines;
•    Provides strategic direction for the School’s curricular planning efforts;
•    Further develops current traditional classical offerings, and works to enhance Jazz, Chamber Music, Rock, and Music Theater and other non-classical and interdisciplinary genres.  This is to be accomplished in collaboration with Faculty Chairpersons and Staff leadership;
•    Provides oversight and enhances the Honors Programs for Levine’s most gifted students
•    Oversees the delivery of flexible programs and options for all students for whom music is avocational;
•    Communicates on a regular basis with Levine families, adult students, and other stakeholders  and represent the School locally and within the field of music education;
•    Reviews and oversees Levine’s mission-based programs, including its program offerings at its campus  in Southeast DC at THEARC;
•    Develops and monitors the education budget to meet strategic educational goals, in conjunction with the CFO and the President;
•    Participates as a member of the Senior Management Team of the School, convenes meetings of the Faculty Leadership (and encourages  and initiates their participative creative thinking), and attends meetings of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, as requested by the President;
•    Regularly attends events and performances of faculty and students.

PROFILE (QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:
•    Advanced degree in music performance or music education.
•    Professional vocal or instrumental performance experience.
•    Successful administrative experience in a community music school, cultural organization, or academic institution.
•    Expertise in one or more of the following:

Position:  Director, Marketing and Communications
Position Summary:    The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for all marketing and communications activities on behalf of the Levine School of Music utilizing both traditional and new media tools to extend the reach of the school.  The selected individual will plan and implement efforts to expand the visibility of the School and will market and promote Levine’s curriculum, events and activities consistent with strategic objectives of the School.  All such efforts will be geared towards building greater local and regional awareness and understanding of Levine, attaining enrollment goals, and positioning the School to more readily secure contributed income.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):    
•    Planning

  • Designs an active, tiered Marketing and  Communications Strategy in support of the School’s strategic priorities and that identifies:
  • Major and minor events to promote and multiple distribution avenues in which to accomplish that
  • Strategic marketing objective for the School, including targets for enrollment growth, events that will be the focus of marketing efforts
  • Relevant partners (both internal and external) to coordinate and leverage marketing and communications;
  • Marketing and communication tools, both internal and external;
  • Audits the current marketing and communications activities stemming from all departments, programs, faculty and staff, and consults with staff and faculty on gaps and overlaps in current systems and projected needs.
  • Assesses the impact, where possible, of current activities and identify those that should be:
  • Used as models for other departments/activities;  
  • Developed/adapted/transitioned from traditional to electronic forms;

•    Implementation

  • Implements the annual Marketing and Communications Strategy as a transparent,  time-bound plan
  • Works with a team, comprised of various staff and faculty, to support and implement the annual strategic plans and resulting tactics
  • Develops and controls (defining parameters) the branded materials and tools for staff and faculty including:
  • Levine style guide to be used by all in creating all of the forms listed below.  
  • Templates for letter head, posters (concerts, student recitals, events, etc.) to enable use by simply inserting text and pictures  
  • Web pages and sections that are consistent in usability and content
  • The training of relevant staff and faculty on use of the web and ancillary materials to manage and develop their own content
  • Provides final approval processes for all content created by staff and faculty.
  • Develops and implements multi-use messages for staff and faculty to employ consistent with the marketing and communications plan
  • Works with Levine’s webmaster on development of an intranet to improve and sustain internal communications for faculty and staff use.

•    Analytics

  • Implements and manages a measurement and analysis process (e.g. through Google analytics) to identify successes and failures, such as web statistics, electronic surveys, cost-benefit analysis of events, etc., and to measure on-going effectiveness of promotional activities.

•     Miscellaneous

  • Establishes and maintain positive relationships with the media (traditional, electronic  bloggers, and social networks);
  • Trains staff and faculty on email and social networking marketing techniques and develops tools that can be easily utilized;
  • Writes the body for all advertisements and press releases, places all of the school's advertising, and coordinates with the Web Designer on the School's website, and serves as the primary writer and editor for Levine's electronic newsletter;
  • Develops the annual marketing budget for all departments and programs.

PROFILE (QUALIFICATIONS):        
•    College or advanced degree in communications or business preferred.
•    Minimum 5 – 8 years of successful administrative and communications experience in a non-profit, educational or community action enterprise preferred.

Position: Registration Assistant
Position Summary:
This position will support the launch of ActiveNet, a new registration system for the School, and will assist the two Student Services staff in maintaining the parallel entry  and quality control activities associated with its deployment. The Assistant will perform numerous clerical and administrative duties, helping to ensure the integrity and accuracy of registration records, student accounts, and enrollment reports.  Routine tasks will include: entering, updating, and retrieving data in the School’s database; organizing and maintaining paper and electronic files; providing information to callers regarding their accounts, as well as helping faculty members use ActiveNet.   

The ideal candidate must be committed to accuracy, be comfortable with computers, and have demonstrated skills in paying close attention to detail.  Previous data entry experience and records maintenance experience is preferred; reliability and being a ‘quick study’ with an eagerness to learn the School’s policies and procedures are more important.  Experience working in a demanding and often busy environment would be a plus. This person also must recognize the confidential nature of the information with which she or he works, and employ appropriate discretion and professionalism.

Job Summary:  The Campus Coordinator is responsible for serving as an important liaison between the Levine faculty, customers and the administrative processes.  The Campus Coordinator also assists the operations of the Campus, by updating bulletin boards, room scheduling, booking outside events in the facility and general monitoring of the appearance of the campus.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Customer Service

Perform a variety of clerical duties involved in greeting and directing students and their families, making appointments, processing forms and providing information to assist students and their families.  Coordinate Levine Entertains. The Campus Coordinator directs families for further assistance in the Department of Student Services, Finance, or with faculty chairs as appropriate. This position requires familiarity with Levine course, events and lesson offerings. The position is located at the front desk and has a rotating schedule. 

Provide information to students on such matters as services, charges and routine  procedures. Answer telephone, take messages, transfer calls and provide information to other departments upon request.

Receive and process payments on client accounts; compare cash receipts and payments in balancing daily work. 

Assist in the compilation of data for regular and special reports.

o Responsible for office equipment (copier, fax, telephone) problems and request repairs and maintenance from vendors when necessary

Faculty Services

Serve as liaison between the faculty and all administrative processes

Job Title: Accounting Clerk
Job Site: NW DC

Position Summary:

This is an entry level accounting position.  The candidate is responsible for a variety of duties including accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger account analyses.  Candidate should be able to work independently, collegially and professionally with students, parents, faculty and staff.  He/she must also be detail oriented and good with numbers. Excellent communication skills along with quality interpersonal and computer skills are expected.  

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Receives invoices and matches them with purchase orders and other verification processes.  Prepare the bills for payment.

Print and mail checks weekly.

Maintain vendor, purchase order and contracts files.

Reconcile the corporate credit card accounts; ensure that all transactions are supported by receipts.

Prepare expense accrual entry at the end of the month.

Process and mail 1099’s at the end of the year.

Prepare invoices for Levine Entertains, facility rental and other accounts receivable items.  Follow up on past due and delinquent accounts.

Enter direct debit contracts on Easypay including any subsequent changes to budget.  Follow up on declined transactions.

Assist on the month-end and year-end closing by entering journal entries in Financial Edge.

Monthly reconciliations of balance sheet accounts.

Other duties as may be assigned by the Finance Manager and the CFO.

Qualifications:

Accounting degree or 3 years related experience.

Excellent organizational and inter-personal skills

Excellent computer skills including all Microsoft programs (Excel, Word,) and Blackbaud Accounting system knowledge or ability to learn it readily. 

Ability to work in a team environment.

Ongoing Internship Positions

Development and Marketing Intern

Internship Description:  The development intern will work directly with the development department on projects to assist with many fundraising and marketing activities. In addition to learning the basic operations of the School and providing administrative support to the department, the intern will be able to work on specific projects in the areas of: special events, grants, prospect research, online giving, donation processing and event management.

 

Qualifications:  An ideal candidate has strong verbal and written communications skills, solid organizational skills, attentiveness to detail, and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Internet research experience. Raiser’s Edge and/or HTML experience a plus. Interest in the arts, education and/or fundraising also a plus. Open to musicians and non-musicians.

Full and part-time internships are available. Applications are accepted throughout the year and the typical duration of the internship is one semester.

 

Early Childhood and Elementary Internship

Open to college seniors majoring in music or music education. Internships available in fall, and spring for 15 weeks each session; Up to two internships will be awarded each session.

Audition requirements: Performance of two pieces on main instrument, a brief sightsinging test, and a teaching audition that includes leading three songs in an Early Childhood Music class.

Resume and Essay: Resume required with references and a one-page essay must be submitted describing the candidate’s interest in teaching Early Childhood Music.

If chosen for this unique opportunity, interns will work with several of our teaching faculty in the classroom. They will be assigned a mentor from our teaching staff and start the program as teacher aides but will gradually begin to teach small parts of the class. The chosen candidate will learn how to write lesson plans, gain a knowledge of Orff, Kodaly and Dalcroze, enjoy training in classroom management techniques, work with teachers at our outreach sites and become familiar with working in a community music school.

Our internship, which is open to any college senior studying music, is a great opportunity to learn about Early Childhood Music. Exceptional graduates of our internship program may be considered for a teaching position at the Levine School of Music.
