Babies & Toddlers | Independent Music Makers | School-Aged Children | MusiKinesis™
Our music classes are designed to give the very young child the love of music for a life-time. Babies and toddlers experience their rhythmic understanding by swaying, rocking and bouncing to the music.
Building Blocks for Babies Age 4-12 months with parent/caregiver
This introductory seven week class provides a wonderful opportunity for a parent or caregiver to discover the joys of making music as they participate with their infant in activities such as singing songs and lullabies, wiggles, tickles and bounces. Information and guidance on children’s musical development is also provided, along with ideas that support the creation of a nurturing musical environment at home.
Music Time for Toddlers Age 1-2 with parent/caregiver
You and your toddler will continue to actively participate together as you explore music through singing, movement, finger plays, bounces, children’s literature, listening and rhythm instruments. Activities are structured to encourage development of the whole child, particularly addressing their motoric, social and musical growth.
Singing Games Age 2-3 years with parent/caregiver
This class was created for your growing toddler and emphasizes singing, instrument playing and cooperative activities within that structure. As the children become more independent, they are asked to contribute ideas and engage in classification exercises that help them identify various types of sounds as they explore their ever-expanding world.

Independent Music Makers
These classes are designed for the individual child without the parent or caregiver present in class. Beginning at age three, the children are ready and need the experience of independent music making. Students use their voices more expressively as they learn to sing and chant. Children at this age are sensitive to phrasing, articulation and dynamics and demonstrate this while playing instruments or moving to the music.
Adventures in Music 3 years old without parent/caregiver
This class is designed to guide your child to independent music making. Skills in singing, listening, movement and instrument playing blossom as they engage in more independent activities that nurture their growing musicianship. Children work in a cooperative environment and are exposed to various orchestral instruments and their families.
Exploring Music 4-5 without parent/caregiver
This class focuses on rhythmic development, pre-notation for music reading, pitch matching and learning to play Orff instruments through a plethora of activities. Children sing, play and move together in this stimulating environment where they are able to explore and develop deeper creativity. “Visiting instruments” are presented throughout the year and students are exposed to new sounds and instrument families.

For School-Aged Musicians
Discovering Music Kindergarten without parent/caregiver
Students begin to explore their own musical ideas in a greater way as concepts are expanded from previous classes. Basic rhythmic notation is introduced as we further develop their musical vocabulary and vocal abilities. We continue to meet a variety of new instruments and children often become drawn to particular sounds (which is helpful in choosing an instrument for private lessons in the future).
Musical Journey 1st and 2nd Grade
Join us for exciting musical adventures as we explore music from around the world! We continue to target the development of musicianship with more complex activities including singing folk songs, dances, rhythmic chants, directed listening and folk tales from a variety of world cultures. Included is a continuation of preparatory activities in reading and writing music, as well as basic ear training and dictation. Students also actively improvise and learn to play in an ensemble setting with their classmates as we explore selected instruments from around the world. This class is a wonderful complement to private lessons and provides a chance to deepen their understanding of musical concepts

Stories in Music and Movement
3rd - 5th Grade What’s more intriguing than a good story? This class links narratives with music and movement in two ways: by using stories as the basis for singing, movement and instrumentation; and by using music compositions as the foundations for inventing story lines. Through Eurhythmics, singing and playing instruments students gain skills in music, movement and improvisation. They then use those skills to create and relate music and movement ideas to character, mood and action.
Puppet Operetta 3rd-6th grade
This class culminates in an original puppet operetta created and performed by the students. We’ll derive musical form from narrative tales, develop melodic and rhythmic refrains with singing and instruments, and even create our own puppets and scenery to perform our operetta. A unique experience in music composition and performance!
Traditional American Songs, Games and Dances 3rd-6th grade
Students will enjoy
learning a repertoire of authentic group songs, games, circle and line dances
from America’s southern and New England regions. These enjoyable gems from the
past develop sense of rhythm, spatial orientation, social cooperation, pitch
and musical form. Family and friends are invited to watch and participate in
the final class.

Orff Ensemble 3rd - 5th Grade
This class is designed to give your child a unique instrumental ensemble experience as they learn to work with other musicians more closely. Children learn expanded techniques using Orff Instruments such as the glockenspiel, xylophone, metallophone and other percussion instruments. Students will collaborate with the Levine Children’s Chorus in a final performance each semester. This is great preparation for band or orchestra and a wonderful complement to private lessons.
Levine Children’s Chorus 3rd - 5th Grade
The Levine Children’s Chorus is a performing ensemble that focuses on developing age-appropriate vocal technique and musicianship skills through children’s choral literature. Benefits of this chorus include: attaining artistic integrity, musicality, ensemble experience and musical literacy. In addition, students will gain confidence, make life-long friendships and find their own voice through music. Highlights include winter and spring concerts, specialized workshops, outreach opportunities, performance with the Orff Ensemble and guest artists. No audition is required.

MusiKinesis™ at Levine
MusiKinesis™ is based on the traditional European method known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics. This contemporary American approach to the Dalcroze work was developed by a Levine faculty member, Monica Dale, in order to tailor the techniques of the Dalcroze method for today’s students.
MusiKinesis™ is centered on rhythmic movement as a basis for developing musical skills and understanding. In addition to kinetic exercises, it incorporates ear training, solfege, singing and improvisation, with the goal of developing musicianship from the inside out.
For children, MusiKinesis™ includes rhythmic movement, songs, stories, poems, props and games, and sparks children’s own creative imaginations. Students learn a wide range of music concepts, and develop skills in coordination, aural perception, spatial awareness and more.
MusiKinesis™ is an ideal preparation for instrumental study and complements private lessons at all age levels. Students taking private lessons at Levine can opt for MusiKinesisTM as a supplemental course and receive discounted tuition rates.
