Percussion
Levine’s Percussion Department offers classes and private instruction in orchestral, jazz, world percussion and drum set. Levine offers several introductory classes for students new to the world of percussion, and for more experienced students who are looking to take their percussion studies to a college level, we offer a Percussion Certificate program.

Exploring Drums (Ages 5 - 6) NWDC Using a variety of methods, students will
be exposed to the vast diversity of the
percussive world. Simple performance and
ensemble playing techniques will be covered
for many traditional and non-traditional
percussion instruments as well as homemade
instruments. Designed for complete
beginners and as a next step for recent
graduates of Early Childhood and Elementary
Music classes.
Drums Around the World I (Ages 7 - 10) NWDC, MD & VA This is an excellent way to get started with
percussion and a next step for recent graduates
of Early Childhood and Elementary Music
classes. Students explore percussion
instruments from around the world in a relaxed
and encouraging setting. This is a yearlong class
with a fi nal performance at the end of the year.
Drums Around the World II (Teens - Adults) NWDC Designed for teens and adults who are
beginners or who have limited experience.
Students explore a variety of percussion
instruments and rhythms from around the
world. This is a yearlong class with a fi nal
performance at the end of the year.
World Music Drumming (Ages 8 - 11) NWDC & MD World Music Drumming, a continuation of the
Drums Around the World class, expands the
drumming spectrum to include new culture
areas and contemporary drumming styles.
Through the teamwork approach to learning
West African and Caribbean drum ensembles
with songs and movement, students explore
the endless world of rhythm and sounds.
Prerequisite: Drums Around the World I.
Ensemble Classes
Percussion Repertoire Ensemble (Teens - Adults) NWDC & VA In this class students will explore the
language, skills and materials of percussion
music through playing a variety of
instruments and performing standard
repertoire by contemporary composers
such as Steve Reich and John Cage.
Percussionists can also participate in Chamber Music ensembles, Wind ensembles and Jazz ensembles.
